He is the author of books — including Making It in the Art World, New Markets for Artists, and Fund Your Dreams — and has spent two decades building an education for artists who are serious about their careers.

Delia Carey
Conceptual artist — born in Madrid, Spain
Delia Carey is a conceptual artist whose work has been displayed at the Whitney Museum Biennial in 2002 and again in 2007, at MoMA PS1, and the Reina Sofia Museum in Spain.
She and Brainard Carey have worked on numerous projects through their collaborative team, Praxis. She is the co-founder and director of the Non-Visible Museum, and the director of Praxis Center.
She is the author and translator of the book previously published under the title Making It in the Art World. Her heart is at home in NYC.

How Praxis came to exist
Praxis means translating theory into action: the process by which a theory, lesson, or skill is enacted, embodied, or realized.
Praxis is doing, ethical action. This is what we do at Praxis: help turn theory into action for artists.
For most of their careers, Brainard and Delia watched talented artists struggle not because their work wasn't good enough, but because no one had ever taught them the other half of the job. Writing about your work. Reaching curators. Applying for grants. Pricing correctly. Understanding how the market actually functions.
The art world has always had an unofficial curriculum. It was passed down through MFA programs, through connections, through being in the right city at the right time. Together they built Praxis to make that curriculum explicit, accessible, and available to any artist anywhere in the world.
The name comes from the Greek word for practice — action informed by reflection. That's the whole project: connecting the work in the studio to the world outside it.
What we believe
- 1. We never mystify the business of being an artist. The art world has a lot of mystification built into it. We don't contribute to that. Everything we teach, we teach plainly.
- 2. The career and the practice are not in conflict. Thinking about your career doesn't compromise your work. It's part of the same project.
- 3. Geography is not destiny. A serious career is possible from anywhere. The tools, the relationships, the strategies — none of them require a New York zip code.
- 4. Honesty is the strategy. In press writing, in grant applications, in your artist statement — the clearest, most honest version is almost always the most effective one.
- 5. The long game is the only game. We're not interested in shortcuts or viral moments. We're interested in careers that last.
