Deborah Scott is a figurative painter who explores themes of resilience, identity, and human connection. Inspired by psychological models like Johari’s Window, her narrative-driven paintings delve into the interplay between the known and unknown aspects of self and relationships. Merging classical techniques with contemporary abstraction, Scott uses fragmented compositions and symbolic elements to capture the tension between vulnerability and strength, offering an emotionally resonant exploration of the human experience. Scott’s work has been exhibited recently at institutions, including the European Museum of Modern Art (MEAM) in Barcelona and the Wausau Museum of Contemporary Art. She exhibits with galleries in New York, San Francisco, Seattle, and Miami, and her practice has been featured in Fine Art Connoisseur and American Art Collector. Scott holds a Master’s degree in Business Administration from Dartmouth College and completed a three-year intensive studio arts program at the Gage Academy of Art in Seattle, WA. Her transition from a successful business career to full-time artist brings a unique perspective to her work, blending analytical precision with creative expression.

Visual Biographies are an ongoing series of painted portraits/biographies, both commissioned and non-commissioned, arising from interviews and deep explorations of others. Everyone has a story that is meaningful. My work explores issues of identity, challenges, vulnerabilities and the resilience of others revealed through their life experiences. Gesture, color and contemporary iconography symbolically convey the story of one’s journey. The oil and mixed media effect of the distress and abstract shapes in my work address the complexity of life and a reminder that many aspects of our lives are hidden and unknowable to others and often even ourselves. The stories are personal and intimate, my work reveals their universality.
