Dina Angel-Wing creates three dimensional art appealing to different senses. She works in different media from the textural experience of paper and clay to the polished tactile sensibility of smooth bronze and glass. Her sculpture strives to create a visual experience that is both aesthetic as well as intellectually engaging. Some of her work has incorporated humor, puns, and symbolism. Currently, her work juxtaposes soft curvilinear figures with architectonic pedestals and smooth bronze contrasted with rusted texturized steel, while her portrait interpretations are known to capture lively personality in the permanence of bronze. My interest in the figure as an art theme started when I was pregnant with my son. The rapid transformation of my body led me identify with different stages and to research metaphors for the female body found in different cultures. From the biblical apple to a pomegranate in “A Thousand and One Nights”, and from shapely pears to the papaya in other cultures. This led to a series of multimedia two dimensional wall interpretations as well as three dimensional free standing bronze sculptures. The sculptures further evolved into complex figures incorporating architectonic frames and bases forming a unifying ensemble in bronze and steel. I like to work on a suite or series of similar motifs, researching a subject or a form, like the closed shapes in the Dreamers suite or musicians series and their instruments. Mother and Child is a suite of sculptures inspired by paintings from the early twentieth century. Commissioned work includes private and public bronze portraits. My aim in these sculptures is to interpret a vision of the personality and uniqueness of the subject beyond only their likeness or basic features. With the commission to honor Gilbert Baker - the creator of the LGBTQ rainbow flag and his supporters, my aim was to imbue the sculpture with the meaning of the flag and the human rights that it represents.
