Portrait of Erica Tamburo

Erica Tamburo is a multidisciplinary artist and photographer based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Drawing upon her background in biomedical imaging, she brings a distinct sensitivity to light, form, and structure—seeing each composition as both an emotional and anatomical study of transformation. Her work blends photography, alcohol ink painting, and floral design through an in-camera multiple exposure technique, creating luminous, layered compositions that explore healing and the beauty found within emotional complexity. Tamburo’s process begins with introspection—an exploration of subjects that hold personal or collective resonance. She translates emotion into color and movement through alcohol inks, then integrates botanicals that embody the theme’s essence. The resulting images are created entirely in-camera, capturing the energy of creation itself and reflecting moments of connection, memory, and renewal. Her work has been exhibited in solo and group shows throughout Pittsburgh and has received international recognition, including honors from the International Color Awards and the Pollux Awards. Through her studio and online platform, ericatamburogallery.com, she offers limited-edition fine art prints and art-inspired designs that extend her visual language into everyday life. Tamburo’s imagery invites viewers to pause—to inhabit the stillness between emotion and reflection—and to recognize themselves within the interplay of light, form, and feeling.

My work explores the intersection of science, emotion, and the natural world. With a background in biomedical imaging, I have spent years studying the ways light and structure reveal the unseen—from the microscopic to the human. This training shaped how I see: not only the surface of a subject, but the layers of energy and story beneath it. My art is a continuation of that inquiry, translating the language of anatomy and light into a visual meditation on healing and transformation. Each piece begins as a personal reflection on an experience or emotion that calls for release or renewal. Through alcohol ink painting and the careful selection of botanicals, I create source materials that carry symbolic and emotional weight. Using an in-camera multiple exposure technique, I merge these elements in a single frame—without digital compositing—to preserve the spontaneity and integrity of the creative act. I am fascinated by the way light behaves through transparency—the shimmer through petals, the diffusion through ink—and how those interactions mirror the process of emotional repair. My work holds space for that delicate balance between fragility and strength, chaos and calm. Ultimately, my art is a practice of seeing—of revealing the beauty within complexity, and of transforming both light and feeling into something whole.
