Lisa Atkinson is an award-winning painter who fuses structural sensibility with expressionist energy. A SCI-Arc M.Arch graduate, Atkinson creates immersive experiences that convey the ephemeral nature of the material world. Since the 2025 Palisades Fire destroyed her home, her abstract practice has explored the fluid properties of burnt media and paint—layering oil over acrylic washes and smoky charcoal in order to evoke organic motifs that convey the resilient flux of our environment. Her painting technique mirrors the phase shifts of water—flowing from fluid creams to dense solids—capturing the moving energy behind organic forms. Atkinson’s work is held in private collections nationwide, from Manhattan to Malibu.

My practice explores the tension between accretion and dissolution, a focus sharpened by the loss of my home in the 2025 Palisades Fire. Drawing on the Deconstructivist traditions of my architectural training at SCI-Arc, I translate fragmented, non-linear spatial concepts into large-scale paintings. By layering acrylic washes, pigment sticks, walnut oils, and smoky charcoal forged from fire, I create nearly inhabitable sites of regeneration. Each canvas utilizes the transformative, liquid-to-solid nature of paint to navigate the threshold between emergence and erasure.
