Mylen is a Filipina American artist who lives and works in Seattle, Washington. A central theme in her painting is responding to capturing movement in the natural world through the process of mark-making. Mylen begins with a monotype print on paper and makes marks with oil paints to reveal movement, layers, textures and space. She has exhibited in solo and group shows in galleries and other art venues in and around the Pacific Northwest area including Seattle, Tacoma and the Methow Valley. Mylen immigrated with her family from the Philippines to the United States in 1982. She attended College for Creative Studies – Center for Art and Design in Detroit, MI, majoring in Graphic Design and Illustration. She has worked as an artist mentor for classroom teachers and a teaching artist serving youth from diverse backgrounds and abilities for Arts Impact, Arts Corps, Seattle Art Museum and Seattle and Highline Public Schools. She has served as a committee and board member for Arts Corps, advocates and participates in various art organizations in her community, most recently as a contributing art juror for the Phinney Neighborhood Association.

Movement is the central theme in my paintings. I move mediums across the surface engaging in acts of shifting, pivoting, going forth and back, repetition, and re-imagination. This process reflects a simultaneous relationship between the materials and me. The resulting artwork is the rewarding product of this partnership. My artworks are references or representations of a memory, a place, a feeling, or, most often nothing. My participation with nature both as an artist and as a human being defines my artistic practice. To me, painting reveals metaphors and awareness about my place and interactions with the world. Through my paintings, my hope is that viewers can find images or feelings with which they can connect. I primarily work in encaustic, printmaking, and painting on wood panels, canvas, or a variety of papers. I build layers as I move paint across the surface using a variety of tools. I simultaneously add and remove space, shapes, lines, or textures to achieve the composition.
