Painters

Build a painting practice the world can find — and sustain.

Common challenges

  • Translating visual work into words — statements, press releases, grant narratives
  • Standing out in a crowded, media-saturated market
  • Pricing work without undervaluing or overpricing
  • Building a collector base without access to the gallery circuit

What Praxis members gain

  • Write an artist statement that actually describes your work
  • Price your paintings with confidence using real market frameworks
  • Get introduced to curators and gallerists through the Roundtable archive
  • Build an email list of collectors and stay top of mind between exhibitions

Painting has never been more visible — and never harder to turn into a career. The internet flooded the market with images. Galleries consolidated. Collectors moved online. And yet painters who understand how to communicate their work, build relationships, and position themselves strategically are doing better than ever.

What painters in the Praxis community are working on

Articulating the work. Painters often know exactly what they’re making and why — but struggle to put it into language that lands with curators, collectors, and press. The Praxis community works through this together: sharing drafts of artist statements, getting feedback on grant applications, and workshopping how to talk about the work in studio visit settings.

Finding the right collectors. Not every collector is the right collector. The Praxis community includes painters who have navigated the difference between building a sustainable collector base and chasing sales that don’t align with the work. They share what has worked — and what has burned time and energy.

Gallery relationships. The Roundtable archive includes conversations with gallerists who work directly with painters. Praxis members have used those recordings to understand what gallerists are actually looking for, then approached galleries with a different kind of confidence.

Pricing and sustainability. One of the most common discussions in the community is pricing — how to raise prices without losing buyers, how to structure editions, how to think about primary versus secondary markets. Painters help painters figure this out in real time.

You are not alone in this

The painters in Praxis span every medium — oil, watercolor, encaustic, acrylic, gouache — and every career stage, from first exhibitions to mid-career pivots. What they share is seriousness about the work and a willingness to think clearly about the career. That combination is rare. In the Praxis community, it’s the norm.
