Ceramicists

The art/craft divide in ceramics has weakened significantly over the past two decades — but it hasn’t disappeared. Ceramicists in the Praxis community are operating on both sides of that line, finding ways to build serious fine art careers while drawing on the full depth of the ceramic tradition.

What ceramicists in the Praxis community are working on

Fine art positioning. The ceramicists who have built the strongest careers in the community have been deliberate about how they position the work — what language they use, which galleries they approach, how they talk about the work’s relationship to the vessel tradition. Members share what has worked.

Writing about process. Ceramic processes — throwing, hand-building, slip-casting, firing — are inherently interesting and often central to what makes the work meaningful. Members have developed ways of writing about process that add to the critical context of the work without reducing it to a technical demonstration.

Functional versus sculptural. Many ceramicists work across both functional and sculptural modes. The community has developed strategies for managing that range — how to present both bodies of work, how to price them differently, how to find the collectors who value each.

The collector education problem. Educating collectors about the depth and value of ceramic work — its history, its difficulty, its relationship to other fine art traditions — is an ongoing project in the community. Members share the language and approaches that have moved collectors from polite interest to real investment.

The Praxis community includes ceramicists who are exhibiting in major galleries, winning significant grants, and building the critical contexts for their work that the medium deserves. You don’t have to navigate this alone.
