Collage Artists

Collage has roots in some of the most important movements of the twentieth century — Cubism, Dada, Surrealism, the Harlem Renaissance. And yet it has often been treated by the market as a secondary practice, accessible to non-artists in ways that other media aren’t. Collage artists in the Praxis community are building careers that put those roots front and center.

What collage artists in the Praxis community are working on

Critical and historical context. Placing your work in the tradition of collage — from Picasso and Braque through Hannah Höch, Romare Bearden, and contemporary practitioners — is a powerful positioning tool. Members help each other develop that context in ways that feel organic to the work.

Copyright and found materials. Using found images and materials raises legal questions that collage artists need to understand. Members share knowledge and resources — not legal advice, but the practical wisdom that comes from navigating these questions in the real world.

Pricing labor-intensive work. A collage made from hundreds of hand-cut elements takes time that the materials don’t communicate. Members have developed pricing strategies that account for that time and present it to collectors in ways that make sense.

The collector education project. Collectors who love collage are often deeply committed to it. Finding them requires understanding where they are — which galleries they follow, which fairs they attend, which artists they already collect. The community helps map that landscape.

The medium is having a real moment

Collage is experiencing serious critical and market attention. The Praxis community includes artists who are at the front of that moment — and who are generous with what they know.
