Mixed Media Artists
Turn a multidisciplinary practice into a coherent, compelling career.
Common challenges
- — Articulating a unified vision across diverse materials and approaches
- — Helping collectors and curators understand a non-linear practice
- — Pricing work that resists easy categorization
- — Standing out when your work doesn't fit a single genre or movement
What Praxis members gain
- ✓ Write a statement that makes the diversity of your practice a strength
- ✓ Find collectors and curators who value range and experimentation
- ✓ Build an exhibition strategy that shows the through-line in your work
- ✓ Price work across media with consistency and confidence
Mixed media artists are often told — implicitly or explicitly — to pick one thing. The Praxis community rejects that premise. The challenge isn’t choosing a medium; it’s articulating why the work requires many. That’s a writing and positioning challenge, and it’s one the community has solved many times over.
What mixed media artists in the Praxis community are working on
Finding the through-line. The most powerful artist statements from mixed media practitioners don’t describe materials — they describe a set of questions that the work is asking. Members help each other find that through-line: the conceptual thread that makes the diversity of the practice coherent rather than scattered.
The categorization problem. Galleries organize by medium; collectors often collect by medium; grant applications ask you to check a box. Mixed media artists in the community have developed strategies for navigating these systems without flattening the work.
Exhibition strategy. How do you curate a show from a practice that spans painting, sculpture, video, and installation? Members have done this and share the curatorial thinking that makes a mixed media show land.
Pricing across media. A painting and a video work in the same exhibition should not necessarily be priced the same way. The community has developed nuanced frameworks for pricing across different media types within a single practice.
Range is not a weakness
In a market that rewards specialization, mixed media artists can feel like they’re at a disadvantage. The Praxis community turns that around: range, when articulated clearly, signals a deeper commitment to the questions than any single medium could answer.
