Textile and fiber art is experiencing a serious critical and market revaluation. Work that was dismissed by the gallery world a generation ago is now in major museum collections. Textile artists in the Praxis community are building careers in that more favorable context — and they’re building them deliberately.
What textile and fiber artists in the Praxis community are working on
Critical context. The art historical arguments for taking textile and fiber work seriously are strong. Members help each other make those arguments — in artist statements, grant applications, and press materials — in ways that are persuasive without being defensive.
The time problem. A work that takes three months to complete cannot be priced the way a painting made in three days might be. Members have developed pricing frameworks that account for time honestly and present them to collectors in ways that lead to yes rather than sticker shock.
Institutional relationships. Museums and foundations that collect textile work have different priorities than commercial galleries. The community includes members who have navigated those relationships and share the inside view.
Craft fair versus fine art fair. Where you show your work positions it. Members have thought carefully about which fairs, which galleries, and which contexts build the career they want — and share that thinking openly.
