Video Artists & Filmmakers

Video art and experimental film occupy a position that spans multiple worlds — the gallery, the festival, the museum, the classroom. Navigating all of them simultaneously requires a strategic clarity that most MFA programs don’t provide. The Praxis community provides it.

What video artists in the Praxis community are working on

The multiple contexts problem. Video artists often show the same work in galleries, at festivals, online, and in institutional screenings — each context with its own norms, its own audiences, and its own economic logic. Members have mapped these contexts and help each other navigate them without getting lost.

Collecting time-based media. Collectors who buy video work need to understand how to store it, display it, and maintain it across changing technology. Members have developed collector education strategies that address these concerns and build confidence rather than anxiety.

Technical presentation standards. Calibration, aspect ratio, sound levels, projection versus screen — the technical decisions in presenting video work are also aesthetic decisions. The community shares technical knowledge generously, and members help each other get it right.

Writing about moving images. Writing about work that unfolds in time requires a different set of tools than writing about objects. Members develop and share language for describing duration, rhythm, attention, and the specific experience of watching — language that serves grant applications, artist statements, and press materials.

The most powerful medium of our time

Video and film have become the dominant languages of contemporary culture. Artists who work in these media — with seriousness and craft — are well positioned to build significant careers. The Praxis community helps them do it.
